U.S. and Confederate military leader. Born near Munfordville, Ky., he graduated from West Point and served in the Mexican War. In the Civil War he established the Kentucky militia and became a Confederate general. Ordered to reinforce Ft. Donelson, Tenn. (1862), he found the situation hopeless and unconditionally surrendered to U. S. Grant. After a prisoner exchange, he served the Confederacy in many capacities. After the war he returned to Kentucky, where he later became governor (1887-91).
