French film director, screenwriter, and producer. After working in public relations in 20th Century-Fox's Paris office, he wrote and produced Bitter Reunion (1958) and directed The Cousins (1959) and The Good Women (1960), all representative of the New Wave movement. Among his many other films are Landru (1962), Les biches (1968), Violette (1978), The Story of Women (1988), and Madame Bovary (1991). He admired A. Hitchcock and used a similar style in several mystery thrillers, incl. This Man Must Die (1969).
