Ancient city, E Greece. Its ruins are located in W Boeotia southeast of Mt. Parnassus, near Orchomenus. Philip II of Macedon won the Battle of Chaeronea there in 338 BC. In 86 BC it was the scene of a victory of Sulla over Mithradates VI of Pontus. Plutarch was born there c.AD 46.
