Assault in May 1863 near Chancellorsville, Va., in the Amer. Civil War that ended in a Confederate victory. The Union army under J. Hooker attempted to encircle the Confederate army under R. E. Lee, but was surprised by a flanking force led by S. Jackson and forced to withdraw. Three days of fighting resulted in a Union retreat north of the Rappahannock River. The Union army lost over 17,000 men out of a force of 130,000; the Confederate army lost over 12,000, incl. Jackson, out of 60,000.
