Group of disorders in which the vessels that branch off from the aortic arch are blocked. It is most common in middle-aged or elderly persons with atherosclerosis (see arteriosclerosis). It impairs circulation to the brain, which can lead to blindness and paralysis. Congenital aortic-arch defects include patent ductus arteriosus and coarctation of the aorta. Treatment is surgical.
