Branch of astronomy that deals with the mathematical theory of the motions of celestial bodies. Kepler's laws of planetary motion (1609-19) and Newton's laws of motion (1687) are fundamental to it. In the 18th cent., powerful methods of mathematical analysis were generally successful in accounting for the observed motions of bodies in the solar system.
