ethnocentrism Explained

ethnocentrism at CMU American English spelling Of Explained:

ethnocentrism at English => English (The Britannica Concise) Of Explained:

Tendency to interpret or evaluate other cultures in terms of one's own. Generally considered a human universal, it is evident in the widespread practice in the West, especially in previous centuries, of labeling non-Western peoples as "savages" or "barbarians" simply because their societies differed from those of the West. Even anthropologists, who are supposed to be sensitive to cultural differences, might characterize all nonliterate peoples as being without religion (as did Sir John Lubbock) or as having a "prelogical mentality" (as did Lucien Lé vy-Bruhl) merely because their ways of thinking did not correspond with those of W Europe. The opposite of ethnocentrism is cultural relativism, the understanding of cultural phenomena within the context in which they occur.
