The new currency is intended to strengthen Europe as an economic power, increase international trade, simplify monetary transactions, and lead to pricing equality throughout Europe. The European Union intends that the euro become the single currency of a unified Western European economy starting in January 2002; the currencies of all 11 countries will remain in use alongside the euro until then. A few members, notably Britain, have announced that they will wait for it to go into effect before deciding whether to join.
